It is believed the first church started some-
time prior to 1890 about 3/4 of a mile east of the current location at a place called The Schoolhouse. Then, in 1890 a plot of land was purchased from John and Phebe Kizer for the sum of $50 for the purpose of erecting a new wooden church.
Originally called the Kizer Church until 1908 when the town name was changed to Cortez.
The current building was erected with the first service held on May 25, 1895.
Most of the materials and services were donated which would account for the time between the purchase of the land and the first service.
The dedication service was an all day affair with Rev. T. E. Davis officiating and the Rev. J. H. Holden delivering the dedication sermon.
